Welcome to the Internet Home of the Twin City Tuba Band.

The Twin City Tuba Band (TCTB for short) is named for its home town of Winston-Salem, NC where it was founded in 1988. The group was formed by Mr. Holli Nelson and Mr. Bart Collins who had a great time at a 1987 Tuba Christmas and wanted the experience to continue. From a small group of about 10 players and roughly 20 pieces of music, the TCTB has grown to about 20 members (mostly amateur players) with several hundred musical selections in its library.  The TCTB has maintained a summer and Christmas performance schedule for every year of its existence. While most of the concerts are played locally, the TCTB has also performed at brass festivals in Cary, NC and Norris, TN.  The Twin City Tuba Band was also honored to perform for the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in 2002. Though a few schools of music have large tuba and euphonium ensembles (greater than a four player quartet), the TCTB is one of the few amateur groups in the country with this instrumentation.  Luckily for the band, the rich Moravian heritage of the Winston-Salem area gives the TCTB many church bands from which to recruit players.  The TCTB loves to perform and is always looking for opportunities to play.  One of the fundamental goals of the group is to let audiences everywhere hear how beautiful and varied music arranged solely for the tuba family can sound.  We hope that you find this site interesting and are able to attend a concert in the near future.

Our Director:

Our current director is Jeff Whitsett.  Jeff is also director of the Salem Band and Euphoniumist for the Piedmont Wind Symphony.  Jeff is no stranger to conducting the TCTB having held the position more years than not.  When he is not waving the stick, Jeff plays first euphonium and during small ensemble play, you may see Jeff direct and play.  Though I am sure Jeff would rather be playing than waving the baton, we are extremely lucky to have such a dedicated and talented conductor, .

Past Directors:

The Twin City Tuba Band has been lucky to find talented directors over its entire history.   Our current director Jeff Whitsett, lead the group for most of the years prior to the 2004 season.  For the 2004 and 2005 seasons, the director's job was held by Patrick Haymore, a middle school band director and talented tubist.  Patrick's stint at the helm allowed Jeff to play for a change.  For the 2006 season, the TCTB was fortunate to recruit a non-tubist, Marcia Sternlieb to wave the stick.  Being a double reed player, Marcia brought a unique perspective to our rehearsals. I think Marcia and the band both learned quite a bit from the experience.

The post of director is a volunteer position and the TCTB is deeply indebted to everyone who has held the position.  Without their selfless dedication as musical directors, the TCTB would not be the group that it is today.  Thank you!
